MVCTC Student’s Design Selected as Ohio’s BPA Pin
Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) student, Tyler Diegel (Ansonia), a senior in the Interactive Multimedia program, submitted a design for the Ohio Business Professional American (BPA) pin contest. There were 51 pins from around the state submitted and voted on by Ohio BPA students on November 11 at the State BPA Fall Leadership Conference in Columbus. Tyler’s design was chosen as one of the top two in Ohio. His design will now be created into a pin that will represent Ohio’s BPA at the BPA National Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

Zane's Story 2011
Zane Wetzel, 2004 alumnus from Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Heavy Equipment program and Arcanum High School, spoke to MVCTC Construction Trades students about OSHA Safety and Safety on the job site. Hit with 69,000+ volts of electricity while working for a power company in Maine, Zane’s family was not sure he would survive.

Veterinary Science Tech Prep 2012
The Veterinary Science major utilizes intensive science and math skills to prepare students to seek employment in the field of veterinary medicine. There is a thorough review of animal behavior, handling, husbandry, medicine, and surgery related to both large and small animals including numerous hands-on demonstrations. A comprehensive review of all major body systems is conducted to allow students to apply this knowledge when performing physical examinations and the diagnosis and probable treatment of common diseases and injuries. Students will prepare for careers as veterinary assistants/aides or continue their education to become veterinary technicians or Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).
Teacher Academy Tech Prep 2012
The Teacher Academy is a senior-only program that provides students a first-hand experience in what it is like to be a teacher. The students will have many opportunities to engage themselves in the role of a teacher. The students have a choice whether they would like to be a full-time student (take academics in the morning/lab in the afternoon) OR they can choose to be a half-day student (take their academics at their partner school in the morning and the MVCTC lab in the afternoon). Students in this program participate in off-campus school internships.
Sports Medicine Tech Prep 2012
The Sports Medicine Tech Prep program requires its students to master a rigorous academic schedule, along with career-specific courses in emergency procedures, sports specific training, injury recognition/evaluation/ prevention, exercise physiology, fitness training, and nutrition/weight management. The students learn techniques from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Employability skills are stressed so students will be able to articulate the principles of wellness to the public.
Robotics and Automation Tech Prep 2012
Students in the Robotics and Automation Program will lean about robots and robotic applications, robotic programming, automated material handling, robotic welding, computer numerical control (CNC), CNC plasma cutting, solid modeling, automated manufacturing work cells, data acquisition analysis, electrical controls, and battling robot design and competition.
Power Technologies Tech Prep 2012
Power Technologies is an experience that provides solid fundamentals of industry knowledge combined with learning lifelong skills for students to work organized, communicate well, and respect others. Power Technologies offers these areas of study: air conditioning, air brakes, electrical, engines, hydraulics, and forklifts. Certifications can be achieved in the areas of air conditioning, forklifts license, and brakes. As the industry focus moves towards electronic controlled systems, the instruction will provide the knowledge necessary to understand and diagnose these systems and controls. Classroom examples are provided with hands-on experience for an excellent learning experience.
Precision Machining Technology Tech Prep 2012
Students in the Precision Machining Technology program make tools that they will use the rest of their lives. When the students leave MVCTC, they will have made enough tools, that if they were to buy them, they could have paid for their toolbox, often many times over. The junior year is spent learning the safety and operation of all the manual machines. They learn to operate many types of lathes, mills and grinders. The senior year, heavy emphasis is on learning new Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machinery as well as honing some of the skills learned the junior year. Seniors also learn solid modeling using SolidWorks, CAD/CAM using FeatureCAM and shop floor programming using ProtoTRAK's. Students are also given the opportunity to earn certification and to compete in the Dayton Tooling and Manufacturing Association (DTMA) BOTS competitions.
Medical Office Management 2012
The MVCTC Medical Office Management program is designed to give students practical experience on how the administrative section of a medical office works. From private practices to large hospitals, a competent office administrator ensures that patient information is accurate, billing is correct, records are maintained, and appointments are scheduled and maintained to maximize the efficiency of the office.
Masonry and Concrete Finishing Tech Prep 2012
The MVCTC Masonry program will teach students to lay different kinds of brick, several types of block and stone, how to prep and pour concrete, including a new process of stamping concrete, and how to lay glass block and ceramic tile. They will learn about different scaffolding and techniques to set the scaffolding in different conditions. Students will also be trained on how to run a skid loader and a forklift. In additional to attaining these skills, students receive Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training.
Marketing and Media Tech Prep 2012
The Marketing and Media program gives students a broad view of business. While students learn about the four P's of marketing (product, place, promotion, and price), they are establishing a solid foundation on which they can build specialized knowledge in a career field. Students can explore sports & entertainment, e-commerce, fashion & merchandising, as well as hospitality & tourism as additional topics in their studies.
Legal Assistant Tech Prep 2012
The Legal Assistant program is designed to prepare students to enter the legal field with a wealth of legal knowledge. You will be trained to understand as well as prepare legal documents by learning the entire Microsoft Office Suite. The areas of law that will be studied are trial procedures, criminal law, civil law, family law, juvenile law, estate planning, probate,bankruptcy, real property, torts, and contracts. We also study the organization of the law office and the court systems.
Media and Video Production Tech Prep - Coming 2012-2013
In this program, student performance is based on authentic assessment. Students are given an overview of the assignment then are given the freedom to pick their project theme for the given guidelines. Using the skills they have learned, students work on many hands-on projects. A student who is creative and open to individualized instruction excels in this environment.
Heavy Equipment Operator Tech Prep 2012
The MVCTC Heavy Equipment Operator program is designed for students to learn not only machine operations, but all aspects of the heavy equipment field. Students study safety in the Heavy Equipment and Construction field, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA )10 hour safety course, blue print reading, grade stake reading, surveying & land layout, basic welding & metal fabricating, commercial driver's license (CDL) preparation and preventive maintenance of equipment. Students completing this program should be well rounded to start a career as a Heavy Equipment Operator
HVAC and Plumbing Tech Prep 2012
The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Plumbing Tech Prep program is a step into the workforce! This program strives to duplicate the real work environment found in the heating and air conditioning industry. All the equipment used in lab is the actual equipment found on the job. Students will be given high skilled knowledge on the latest technology and a peek into the many different areas of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Plumbing trade.
Health Careers Academy Tech Prep 2012
The first year of the Health Careers Academy Tech Prep program allows students the opportunity to complete the 75-hour state of Ohio Nurse Aide Training curriculum, which is required to be able to give care to residents of a long-term care facility. This training is completed in one semester and is considered the core of the curriculum. In addition, one quarter is spent studying medical assisting, which prepares the student to gain entry-level skills to work in a doctor's office. Another quarter is devoted to medical laboratory training, where the student learns phlebotomy skills, and how to perform basic laboratory tests.
Electronics Engineering Tech Prep 2012
Students design and construct an analog volt meter, DC power supply, wireless remote control car, logic probe, and digital multimeter. During one quarter of the program, students build, modify, and repair computers. Students also take two Sinclair Community College classes during their lab time: one course uses Boe Bots and the other one uses Programmable Logic Controllers. Students in this career program can receive other college credits by passing college course tests.
Electrical Trades Tech Prep 2012
Students in the MVCTC Electrical Trades program layout, assemble, install, maintain, and test electrical fixtures, apparatus, control equipment, and wiring used in lighting, power, communications, and electrical systems of homes, factories, and other buildings. They sometimes work outside, on ladders, and in crawl spaces. Students used algebraic math formulas to calculate electrical power, wire size, and conduit bends. They install high technology equipment and controls, which requires knowledge of safe work practices and using the National Electric Code. Because of the teamwork nature of the profession, the student's daily attendance is very important.
Early Childhood Education Tech Prep 2012
Students in the Early Childhood Education program learn about children from birth to school age. In this program, students develop lesson plans and incorporate these for the MVCTC Preschool as well as field sites. They will gain an understanding of how children develop and how to incorporate the Ohio Department of Education preschool standards into their curriculum. Each student will be trained in CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse recognition/prevention and communicable disease recognition. The students also have the opportunity to take Child Development Associate (CDA) course work so at the end of the senior year they are eligible to apply for their CDA credential. This program will give the students the knowledge and foundation to become a teacher in the Early Childhood field.
Digital Design Technology Tech Prep 2012
The MVCTC Digital Design Technology Tech Prep program is all about using computer software and technology to create advertisements, websites, Flash animations, videos, and other means of visual communication. Students learn the principles and elements of graphic design and communicating a message through visual media. In addition, students learn photography, videography, and audio production. Three-dimensional animation is introduced on a basic level during the second year of the program. This program is taught by a CIW Web Design certified instructor.
Dental Assistant Tech Prep 2012
The Dental Assistant program prepares students to assist the dentist with chair-side procedures such as fillings and crown preparations. The junior year students learn the background knowledge to assist in general dentistry. The senior year students learn all the specialty areas of assisting and radiography. Second semester of the senior year, students have the opportunity to work in local dental and specialty offices. In order for students to be successful in this program, they must like to work with people and be good with fine motor skills. There are many job opportunities in dental assisting. Local employers are eager to hire and are looking for dental assistants with positive attitudes and excellent attendance.
Criminal Justice Tech Prep 2012
The Criminal Justice program is a semi-military program, with students required to wear uniforms twice a week. A physical workout is also part of the daily schedule. The program is devoted to teaching patience, respect, furthering student's education, and providing educational choices and advanced employment preparation for our students.
Cosmetology Tech Prep 2012
The Cosmetology profession has endless opportunities. The MVCTC Cosmetology program teaches the basics of the profession. This is a program mandated by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology. The goal of the lab is to prepare students for the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Exam, which is taken at the end of their senior year. After passing this exam, students will receive their Cosmetology license to work in this career.
Food Science Tech Prep - Coming 2012-2013
Students who major in Food Science will study a higher level of food chemistry and dig deeper into concepts previously studied to learn more about the properties of food components and how to work with complex food systems. During lab, students will conduct hands-on experiments to experience the processes and techniques used in the food science field. Students will also visit food producers, manufacturers, distributors, and quality control sites to learn first-hand about the career opportunities available in this industry.
COSA Animal Science Management 2012
Students in the Animal Science Management major will learn about many different large and small animals. They will learn to groom dogs, run an actual retail shop, and train animals. Students in Animal Science Management also are given the opportunity to compete in state contests that demonstrate the skills they have learned in the program.
Animal Science Management students will be required to complete a breeding project, study genetics, animal welfare vs. animal rights, freshwater and saltwater fish, diseases, and behavior.
COSA Plant Science 2012
Students will grow plants from food crops to ornamental plants in both an inside greenhouse with controlled environment and an outside natural environment in order to research varying factors affecting plant growth. Heat and cold tolerance, drought resistance, yield potential, alternative uses and insect and disease resistance are all factors students will study. From grafting to gene splicing, students will work to understand how modern plant science is keeping up with global demands.
COSA Environmental Engineering Tech Prep 2012
The Environmental Engineering major is probably one of the most diverse programs on campus at MVCTC. Our students receive both a foundation in Environmental and Natural Resources related careers; they also may qualify to receive college credit for Environmental Engineering classes at Sinclair Community College. Environmental Engineering students have the opportunity to specialize in any Environmental/Natural Resource area through co-op placement or apprenticeship.
Construction Carpentry Tech Prep 2012
The MVCTC Construction Carpentry Tech Prep program is a great way to learn construction carpentry. Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared for entry-level positions in the construction industry in both residential and commercial construction. Students will have the opportunity to learn the skills needed to build their own home or complete any remodel job on a residential home. Students will also have the opportunity to enter construction management programs at post-secondary colleges.
Computer Technology Academy Tech Prep - GIS and Technical Intelligence 2012
Learn to use ArcGIS software and satellite simulation software. You will also learn to make informational maps from digital images, geographic information, and demographic information. Learn how to analyze this information and apply it to real world situation.
Computer Technology Academy Tech Prep - Game Programming and Web Applications 2012
Learn to create software applications, 3D animations, computer games, and interactive web applications using programming code and specialized software. You will also design a complete web e-commerce site using Java programming and create web pages that have creative visitor interaction.
Computer Technology Academy Tech Prep - Computer Repair and Technical Support
In Computer Repair & Technical Support, students complete hands-on labs to learn about operating systems, troubleshooting PC problems, working with end-users, and during senior year build their own computer which they may keep. Also, prepare for the CompTIA A+ Certification Exam.
Computer Technology Academy Tech Prep - Computer Engineering and Automated Technologies
Learn about electronics, computer networking, and home automation. Digital home technologies can include the design and management of computer networks, audio and video, telephone, security, and surveillance. This specialty area would prepare you for a career in "Smart Home Technology."

The MVCTC Computer Network Engineering Tech Prep program (CCNA) is a Cisco Academy program that prepares students not only for college, but also for the workforce. It gives students hands-on experience and the knowledge to troubleshoot computer-networking problems. Students learn everything from making cables, to how the World Wide Web (internet) works. We have the latest industry technology to support the curriculum.
Clerical Services 2012
The Clerical Services program teaches basic office skills and professional leadership skills. Students in this program learn how an office functions by utilizing computer software, the internet, filing systems, telephone communication, and various business forms. Students also enhance their keyboarding, math, accounting, reading, research, and professional employability skills. Students, who complete the Clerical Services program, may have opportunities to continue on to post-secondary education and/or may be qualified for employment in an introductory office setting.
Business Ownership Tech Prep 2012
In the Business Ownership Tech Prep class, you will learn many aspects to owning and managing your own business. We allow you the diversity to decide what business YOU want to start. Naming and designing your business, managing employees, keeping track of your finances using QuickBooks, and developing a web page are a few of the many things you will learn in the Business Ownership class. You will develop a real business plan to attain financing to start your business. This class will teach you how to market your business and treat your customers and employees well so that you remain a success for years to come.
Business Academy Tech Prep - Coming 2012-2013
The Business Academy Tech Prep program is a great stepping stone to prepare students for studying business at a four-year university. Students will get a great college experience in a high school setting. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to get a head star on their future.
Biotechnology Tech Prep 2012
In the Biotechnology Tech Prep program, students will build upon their knowledge to explore uses for science. Biotechnology does not just cover one area. Students will perform experiments in agriculture, medicine, forensics, genetics, and many other areas.
In our state-of-the-art clinical facility, students perform hands-on lab experiments. These lab experiments are the result of student research, lectures, and reading assignments. Students are required to write-up their experiments using a standard method of reporting laboratory data. This helps to prepare them for their college science classes.
Automotive Technology Tech Prep 2012
The Automotive Technology program is designed around the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) standards and our students gain exposure to four of the eight automotive specialty areas. The instruction that our students receive is done through classroom and hands-on lab activities.
Auto Services 2012
Auto Services is an auto maintenance program designed for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that emphasizes hands-on learning. Students work individually and in teams to learn the needed skills. Students who achieve the needed skill levels can qualify for the half-day Advanced Placement program during their senior year.
Architectural Technology and Engineering Technology Tech Prep 2012
The Architectural Technology and Engineering Technology Tech Prep program covers architectural and mechanical drafting. Students are introduced to both fields and have a choice as to which they will prefer studying more in depth while at MVCTC. Students start on the drawing board with pencil drawing and then proceed on to drawing on computers in both 2D and 3D. They learn to document the information they are conveying to the person who will be using their print to build, be it houses or mechanical assemblies. As they gain expertise, they advance to more complex design and assembly opportunities.
Allied Health Technologies Tech Prep 2012
Allied Health Tech Prep students gain knowledge and practice skills associated with each body system to further a career in a variety of health care professions such as respiratory care, physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy assistant, radiologic technologist, surgical technology, nursing, medical assisting, dietetics and nutritional management, etc. Students have the opportunity to be certified in CPR and First Aid, learn fundamentals of phlebotomy and electrocardiography. Upon completion of the nurse aide training program students will be able to take the exam to become a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA). While earning high school credits, students have the opportunity to gain up to 20 credits through Sinclair Community College. The program prepares students to transition to college at the end of the senior year entering one of many life and health sciences careers.
Agricultural Services 2012
The Agricultural Services program surveys a multitude of agriculture career areas including production, maintenance, service, processing, customer relations, and sales. Students also learn valuable life skills that are necessary in the workplace.
Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Tech Prep Program 2012
This MVCTC program is unique and one-of-a-kind. While officially titled Air Force Junior ROTC, in reality it is an aviation careers course. Students are taught the complete Junior ROTC program; and since we are in a career technical lab setting, we can do so much more in a normal school day. In conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft maintenance course, we provide an educational experience unlike any other in the United States.

Allied Health Tech Prep Complete Nursing Assistant Training
Allied Health Technologies Tech Prep students took part in a Nursing Assistant Pinning Ceremony in April 2011. Participating in the ceremony were the 21 students who have successfully completed the Nursing Assistant Training Program.

The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Youth Connections team scored 495 points at the State Knowledge Bowl competition, which placed them 4th overall in their division. Medical Assistant Seniors Raise Money for "Go Red for Women"
The MVCTC 2010-2011 Senior Allied Health Medical Assistant class raised money and awareness for the "Go Red for Women" campaign. The money was donated to the local American Heart Association.

MVCTC Recives Grant
The Lam Research Foundation made a $20,000 grant to the Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) to fund its Certified Production Technician (CPT) program. Silfex in Eaton, a division of Lam Research, has partnered with the MVCTC to provide individuals with the manufacturing skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

Allied Health Tech Prep Students Complete Nursing Assistant Training
Allied Health Technologies Tech Prep students took part in a Nursing Assistant Pinning Ceremony on April 29, 2010. Participating in the ceremony were the 22 students who have successfully completed the Nursing Assistant Training Program. Students are now eligible to sit for the State Nursing Assistant Exam.
